Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook. The Command Line Argument Is Not Valid
By Timothy Tibbetts |
If you're receiving an error that states "Cannot Start Microsoft Outlook. The Command Line Argument Is Not Valid. Verify the Switch You Are Using" then there's a couple of possible quick fixes.
1: Verify COM Add-ins Aren't a Problem
Press the Windows Key + R and type in Outlook /safe followed by enter. You will now be asked which profile to use. Select the profile you want and click on OK. Microsoft Outlook will now start in Safe Mode.
Click on File > Options > Add-ins and select COM Add-ins from the drop-down menu, and finally click the Go button.
Here you need to do some guesswork to determine that one of your add-ins aren't the problem. The best bet is to uncheck them all and see if Microsoft Outlook starts up without the error. You could also do this one at a time. If you find that Microsoft Outlook opens fine, narrow down which one is the problem, highlight that add-in and click on Remove. Reinstalling the add-in might keep Microsoft Outlook running with that add-in if you need it.
2: Re-register Outlook files
There are quite a few DLL files associated with Microsoft Outlook, but two, in particular, are more important and worth re-registering them. Press the Windows Key + R and type in regsvr32 OLE32.DLL and then regsvr32 INETCOMM.DLL. See if Microsoft Outlook runs now.

3: Repair with Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool
This Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool only fixes damaged PST files, but it's worth a try. You want to run SCANPST.exe from either C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16 or C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16.
Select Browse, select the backup file and click on Start to begin the repairs.
4: Repair or Reinstall Microsoft Outlook
Hopefully, you didn't make it this far, but if you did, we need to repair or reinstall Microsoft Outlook.
Start, Control Panel, Apps and find Microsoft Outlook. When you click on it, you should have a repair option. Try that first, and if Microsoft Outlook still fails to run, you will have to uninstall and reinstall
