HomeGroup to Be Removed From Windows 10 - How to Share Your Printers and Files
By Timothy Tibbetts |
You might have heard that Microsoft is removing HomeGroup from Windows 10 in the Spring update. What's this mean for you? Nothing. You can still share files and printers easily.
Naturally, when Microsoft makes changes, there are always complainers. HomeGroup, however, is being removed because it's useless in today's world and file and print sharing are simple to do at any skill level.
1: Sharing Printer(s)
To share your printer, follow these instructions from Microsoft. While it's easy to do, it depends on what printer and how you want to share so we'll send you to Microsoft to get it done.
2: Sharing Files or Folders
Open File Explorer and right-click on the folder or files you want to share, click Properties, and then click on the Sharing tab. Typically, the Network File and Folder Sharing is grayed out, so click on the Advanced Sharing button instead.
Now click on Share this folder and change any other settings you like including Share name, number of users, and comments.
There's also a Permissions button. Here you can decide if a user has full control, or can change or only read. Just decide from Allow or Deny to determine who can modify, change or only view your files. Simple, right?
Finally, you probably spotted the Caching button. Here you can choose which, if any, files and programs are available to offline users.
There you have it. No HomeGroup? No problem!
