How to Disable Live Photos on Your iPhone

By Timothy Tibbetts

on 06/15/2023

Live Photos are a neat feature that allows you to see any photo as a brief video by holding your finger on any photo. But, it does take up 3-5MB additionally per photo causing a problem for those who have smaller capacity iPhones. It's simple to disable. Here's how.

One reason we prefer to do this is that we copy and paste photos from our iPhone to PC and these movies get in the way. They are disorganized and make a copy and paste nearly impossible.

Go to Settings, scroll down to Camera and select Preserve Settings.

There are only a few settings here, and you should see Live Photo. Gray is off, and green is on. Make sure that the switch is on, or green.

The nice thing about Live Photos is the setting is easy to get to so you can always turn Live Photos on and off anytime without little effort.

One last thing. If you've taken a lot of photos, the movies may remain there wasting space until you delete the photo. That's great unless you don't want to delete your photos.

If you can plug your iPhone into your computer by USB, we can manually delete them. Once plugged in, open File Explorer and look for ((typically) your iPhone > Internal Storage > DCIM > 100APPLE. Now find and delete all .MOV files you see.

One thing to be sure is that your iPhone is on and open. If it isn't, you might not be able to see your photos. If you open your iPhone, it might close File Explorer. Merely open File Explorer again, and you'll see the folders.

Finally, after an update, this stopped working properly although the settings are there. You can disable Live Photos every time you use your camera. Looks for the small circle and click it on or off before taking a photo.
