Our Love Hate Relationship With Facebook
By Timothy Tibbetts |
Facebook. Love it or hate it, everyone has an option. But, like the Kardashians, most people we talk to claim they don't use, or pay attention to, Facebook. The ones who do; well they're annoying. Why is Facebook so irritating now, or is it just us? Let's discuss the pros and cons and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Love
1: Connecting with family and friends. This is what Facebook was supposed to be about.
2: Using Facebook login for other websites and applications. It's convenient and pretty awesome.
Hate
1: Sharing. We've been blocking the sites that people share for three weeks. And it won't stop. We are not friend collectors, currently with less than 200 friends. We can't figure out how anyone finds Facebook tolerable with 1,000 friends.
2: Politics. We have a newsflash for you. We don't care about your opinion, and we're not changing ours.
3: Ads. We don't begrudge anyone making money. Stop here and click this ad.
But seriously, what a mess. Suggested sites, suggested groups, games, trending, events, pages, shortcuts, explore, create, publish, photo, live, invite and so much more.
4: Birthdays. If we wanted to wish you a happy birthday, we'd know it was your birthday. But, for about 175 of our 200 friends, we don't care. We even change our birthday every year, then back again, just to avoid it.
5: Suggested friends. This list is a whos who of people I've been avoiding on Facebook. They somehow managed to get the algorithm backwards.
6: Facebook continues to add more features. They don't want to be the social media site they started out as. They want to be it all. Shopping, music, everything. And, by the way, the marketplace sucks.
7: Instagram is the cool social media now. Brought to you by Facebook. Facebook bought Instagram, so checking in on Facebook, but posting Instagram to Facebook is pretty funny to watch. You have to give it to Facebook for buying a social media site that people use as the anti-Facebook site. Brilliant.
And, there you have it. While it changes little, we long for the day we just logged in, caught up with friends and family we're not near and maybe saw an ad or two. This juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down with over 2 billion monthly active users. That puts Facebook in the #3 position behind only Google and YouTube. Instagram is #16.
We still use it, and we use it every day. We almost have no choice. We've even considered deleting our account and starting fresh to narrow down our list of "friends." If Facebook was a relationship and we had two reasons for and seven reasons against, that relationship would be over. Maybe it's time?
We'd love to hear from you. Agree? Disagree? Did we forget something?
