Another company gets scammed to send W-2 info to cybercriminals.
American Senior Communities has reported that a few employees had their tax returns sent back as being duplicates. An employee fell for a phishing scam and released the information to the scammers who have used it to file false income tax returns.
The breach is affecting 17,000 employees. In mid-January, a scammer posing as an American Senior Communities senior executive requested the W-2 information and an employee did as requested. It wasn't until February 17th that the scam was realized when a few employees reported the return of the tax forms due to being duplicates.
American Senior Communities notified all its employees the day it learned of the breach. It also informed local law enforcement, the Indiana Attorney General's Office and the state's Revenue Department. However, the horse was already out of the barn.
American Senior Communities had this to say: “No resident or personal health information was obtained during this attack. ASC takes privacy seriously and deeply regrets that the incident occurred and offers our sincerest apologies to everyone affected.”
