Ericsson says it has been successful at sending messages at 5 gigabits per second over a wireless test bed for future “5G” mobile networks.
That is about 50 times faster than todays speediest LTE networks. LTE networks operate at about 100 megabits per second.
But don't expect that any time soon. It could be as much as 6 years before it is deployed; possibly in conjunction with the 2020 Olympics.
One of the expected components of a 5G network will be short-range base stations that offer fast data over a small area at frequencies higher than those in use today.
The roll-out of 4G LTE technology continues around the world. Most users are constitute around 50 percent of mobile subscribers in South Korea and about 30 percent in Japan already using LTE networks.
