Being on traffic duty comes with many risks for patrol officers; they never know who they are pulling over, what they are hiding, or who they are hiding. Officer Keith Moore finds out just how true this fact is when his field camera catches something that would be much less surprising on some back road in Florida, not Texas.
KRISTV, in Coprus Christi, TX, tells us that while Moore was writing someone a traffic ticket on Wednesday, something happened that the police academy did not prepare him for. Footage from the officer's sunglasses' camera shows Moore asking the driver to sign a citation. The video shows the officer reaching into the truck to hand the driver a pen when a monkey hiding in the back seat lunges forward and attacks the officer's hand. The officer jumped back in shock and went to his patrol car to tell his sergeant what happened.
"His monkey attacked me!" you can hear Moore telling the other officer. "What?" he replied. "He's got a monkey and it attacked my hand. I'm not even kidding," Moore is heard saying.
The rookie officer wasn't seriously hurt but it's definitely something he'll never forget. Today we tracked down the monkey and its owner. We knew interviewing the owner, Richard T. Spohrer, known as "T" The Monkey Man.
The 13-year-old Capuchin monkey named April is actually pretty friendly. She and her owner have a business partnership with a man named "Birdman Bob" and his two Macaws in Port Aransas.
The Monkey Man recalled what happened during the traffic stop. "His hands came inside the truck," he said referring to Officer Moore, "and that's when she said, 'No, that's not going to happen.' I kept going, 'Oh Honey, not a police officer please please!'"
The Monkey Man says he and April have been partners for seven years now and she wouldn't hurt a fly. In fact, she doesn't even have teeth.
"She knows she doesn't have any teeth but she also knows that if she takes your hand and sticks it in her mouth real quick, it makes your heart go, 'ba boom ba boom,'" The Monkey Man explained.
