The hacking collective Anonymous, to protest the death sentences of two Myanmar migrant workers convicted of murdering two British tourists, claimed responsibility for shutting down 14 Thailand police websites on Tuesday.
Anonymous posted a 37 minute video on its Facebook page accusing the Thai police of using the migrant workers as an excuse to quickly close down the case. The collective also accused the police of mishandling evidence and using intimidation and torture methods to quickly convict and execute foreigners in this and other cases.
The Thai police did confirm the hack although no third party confirmation was available.
"They're not good enough to hack into our system and steal any of our data," police spokesman Dechnarong Suthicharnbancha told the wire service.
Anonymous also posted the email address of the police with a challenge to its readers to try to crack the email password.
The verdicts sparked anger and protest in Myanmar where hundreds gathered outside the Thai embassy to demand the release of the two.
