Another Bitcoin exchange was hacked and the thief made off with an undisclosed amount of loot.
Bithumb, the fourth largest cryptocurrency exchange revealed that an employee’s personal computer was hacked and the crook made off with the details of with over 31,800 Bithumb users.
At first, the company thought the hacker made off with just customer names, email addresses, and mobile phone numbers. But after customers started complaining that their accounts were being drained, Bithumb started taking a closer look.
One customer claimed that they had lost as much as 10 million won ($8,700) worth of cryptocurrency. Some news outlets claim that the losses could amount to billions of won in cryptocurrency.
The company reported in their blog post that they are willing to provide compensations of up to 100,000 won ($897) per affected user. "As soon as the amount of damages is confirmed, we will reimburse the entire amount of damages," said Bithumb in an official statement.
This is the third hack of cryptocurrency exchanges in the last two months. It includes Yapizon, which reportedly lost as much as 3816.2028 Bitcoin (over $5.5 million) as well as Classic Ether Wallet.
