Apple had a great 2014. It saw a 50 percent year-over-year increase in billings and $10 billion in revenue for app developers.
And New Year’s day was another record. Within the first week of January, Apple device owners worldwide spent nearly half a billion dollars on apps and in-app purchases.
Eddy Cue, Apple senior vice president said in a statement: "This year is off to a tremendous start after a record-breaking year for the App Store and our developer community. We're so proud of the creativity and innovation developers bring to the apps they create for iOS users and that the developer community has now earned over $25 billion."
Apple takes a 30% take of app sales which translated into $4.5 billion for 2014. But that was a drop in the bucket for overall sales. Apple took in $183 billion for its 2014 fiscal year.
The App Store is filled with more than 1.4 million apps. Over 725,000 are designed for the iPad itself. App Store developers have earned $25 billion from the sale of apps and games since its origin in 2008.
