Are the Chinese bugging Russia?

The Russians are calling foul. It seems they have discovered items imported from China to have tiny computers that seek out open WiFi networks and then get to work sending spam and distributing malware.

Rosbalt, a St Petersburg news outlet, reported that in a closer examination of items, 20 to 30 were found to have embedded 'spy' microchips” capable of sending data to a server.

All of the components could easily be hidden in handles and such, but one of the reports indicated that the items were chosen because of a weight discrepancy. It is hard to believe that a few grams would cause an alert.
