Three foreign suspects were arrested by authorities in connection with the heist of $2.5 million stolen from dozens of ATM machines.
The suspects were Eastern European and Russian, while 13 other suspects are believed to have fled the country. Authorities have been able to recover about half of the stolen money.
Of the three suspects arrested, one was a Latvian man while the other two were arrested in the capital of Taipei.
It is still unknown how the thieves did it. But speculation is that they managed the theft with the use of mobile phones.
"This is the first time that an international team of ATM thieves has committed a crime in Taiwan," the head of the police's Criminal Investigation Division, Lee Wen-chang said.
