Ashley Madison is seriously intent on catching the hackers that compromised their website.
The company is offering a $500,000 Canadian ($377,000 U.S.) reward for information to help catch the hackers. The hackers call themselves the “Impact Team.”
The leaked data is considered to be the cause of two suicides in recent weeks.
Ashley Madison functions as a dating site for married folks looking for an affair, and Established Men, another Avid Life Media property, does the same for young women seeking to meet rich men.
The Impact Team took issue with the companies stated policy of offering to remove users data for a fee of $19, which the hackers said isn’t true. The leaked data proved that point.
With the release of the stolen data, other hackers have been trying to blackmail users for bitcoins. Cloudmark has been investigating a series of emails demanding 1.05 Bitcoin, or around $250 as of Friday, in exchange for not releasing Ashley Madison data to family and friends.
Paying ransoms or blackmails is not recommended, and could possibly lead to more extortion in the future.
