Andrew Skelton, 43, a Morrisons supermarket auditor, has been sentenced to eight years in prison.
Skelton has been accused of leaking the personal info on over 100,000 supermarket employees. The charges include fraud, unauthorized access and disclosing personal data after he leaked the information in retaliation following his company chastising him for using the mailroom to send eBay packages.
The information released was personal info which included salaries, insurance numbers, date of births, and bank account details. According to the Yorkshire post, the cost to rectify the breach cost more than $3.1 million.
In a failed attempt to cover his tracks, the former auditor created fraudulent accounts to implicate a coworker.
In 2013, Skelton's personal use of the mailroom came to light when his office received a package suspected of containing synthetic drugs. Although it was a false alarm, it did alert the company to the abuse of mailroom privileges.
