AV-Test Institute tested AV products for not only their effectiveness but also for impact on the system.

They ran two tests, one in Jan. and another in Feb. using both known malware and latest threats. About a third of the products did well enough to earn 6.0 of 6.0 possible points in this test, but three stood out by blocking 100% of the malware in all four tests. Those products were F-Secure, Norton, and Trend Micro.
Microsoft's Windows Defender averaged less than 75 percent across the four tests.
Next, the company ran tests to see how the software performed and effected the system. They measure the time required to perform activities like "visiting websites, downloading software, installing and running programs and copying data," comparing the times before and after installing each product.
Bitdefender, Kaspersky , and Qihoo earned a perfect 6.0 in this test. Microsoft's Defender slowed things enough that it only scored 3.5 points.
The final test checked for incorrect blocking of legitimate websites and incorrect detection of valid programs as malware. Kaspersky, Microsoft, and Qihoo didn't incur a single false positive. Avira and ZoneAlarm likewise did their jobs without maligning valid programs or websites.
Top products with a perfect 18 points were Kaspersky and BitDefender. Qihoo, which is very popular in its native China, rounds out the winners' circle.
