Avast Update Kills Internet Access

An Avast update has rendered computers unable to access the internet.
Users are having to disable the AV in order to gain internet access. The update that caused the issue was one that was released on Wednesday.
Many of the affected users were able to gain access after uninstalling Avast and re-installing it. In fact, Avast sent out a bulletin suggesting the same procedure.
This is not the first time Avast has screwed systems. Two weeks ago, an Avast update started flagging system files as malware and rendered their systems trashed.
An Avast spokesman had the following comment:
We have identified that the problem is caused by an update issue of the dynamic link library (dll), which is part of the WebShield feature. We are preparing a patch that we will provide to the small number of users affected as soon as possible.
