Avast warns of support phone call scam alert

Contributed by: Email on 03/15/2012 09:20 AM [ comments Comments ]

Avast is warning their users that a scam is underway where a handful of their customers are receiving phone calls from someone identifying themselves as an “Avast Customer Service rep” and they want to take control of your computer to resolve an issue for a fee.

Adam Riley from Avast wants to set the record straight on their customer service policy which applies to most other companies:

“I would like to set the record straight – here at AVAST, we never phone our customers (unless they specifically ask us to of course) and none of the partners we work with do either. We currently offer free and premium in-bound phone support for our English speaking customers (and also Spanish from next week) and we remain happy to assist as much as we can via email and our ever-popular user forum, but we do not make unsolicited calls – not for sales, not for support, and certainly not to try to scam our loyal customers.”

I don’t think we can repeat this too many times; Never give out your credit card details, download software you did not want and never give remote access to someone you do not know and trust. In short, you can stay safe on the internet the same way you stay safe in real life. Be wary of any offer that sounds too good to be true and more importantly never sign up or pay for a service that you did not go looking for yourself. By doing that, you will never fall for a scam because someone contacted YOU to provide a service. The world is full of safe, trusted companies and software that you can find, and research, on your own.

As always, remember Majorgeeks.com has always tested their software for price, quality and malware before malware existed.

Have a great weekend and be safe!
