AVG, Whatsapp sites breached by Palestinian hackers

Posted by: Jon Ben-Mayor on 10/08/2013 02:11 AM [ comments Comments ]

My morning routine consists of checking for updates on the multiple listings that we have here on Majorgeeks, which includes the AVG Anti-Virus Update. Today, for the first time that I can remember the whole site was unavailable.

The error message that I received is shown below.

**The AVG site does not display any message - as one of our subscribers correctly points out below - it is simply unavailable at this time. The Avira page however is still showing the KDMS team message.**

Not wanting to draw the attention of my boss, I took a quick look around and found out the reason (and it wasn't me- thank goodness!). Techie News explains that a Pro-Palestinian hacking group seemingly affiliated with Anonymous has hacked AVG.com website and posted a patriotic rendition of Palestinian national anthem.

The group calling itself “KDMS Team” defaced AVG.com website and left a message that starts off with the words “MISSION COMPLETED”. The entire message has been written in terrible English and from the words “We Are Here To Deliver Tow Messages” it seems that the KDMS team has two things to convey through this hack. First is in favour of Palestine and the alleged land grabbing by Zionist. The second one claims that there is nothing as ‘full security.’

Around the same time the hacking collective took down whatsapp.com as well and posted a similar message on its home page. It may be possible that KDMS team may have changed the DNS records of both the websites and redirected everyone traffic to their own IP addresses during and following the hack. Whats.app is not reachable as of this writing and it seems the company is trying to fix the hack and get everything in line.

No word on whether any customer information has been compromised, and there has not been any official statement from either company regarding the breach.
