Bitcoin Exchange Hacked; $72 Million Stolen

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 11/19/2016 10:23 AM [ comments Comments ]

Another Bitcoin exchange got hacked and the thieves made off with 120,000 units worth approximately $US72 million.

The Hong Kong exchange, Bitfinex, announced that 119,756 bitcoin had been stolen from users’ accounts. The exchange is not certain on how to proceed after the heist.

Zane Tackett, Director of Community & Product Development for Bitfinex, said: “The bitcoin was stolen from users’ segregated wallets.”

“It’s the biggest USD exchange, so outside China it’s the one that everyone has an account with,” said Antony Lewis, a bitcoin expert in Singapore.

Authorities are not sure if it was possibly an inside job.

Trading was suspended on Tuesday in light of the theft.
