Bitcoin Price Plummets after Heist from Bitfinex Exchange

It is estimated that Bitfinex suffered a loss of £49 million of bitcoins. It announced the hack but provided no info on how the hack took place or exactly how much was taken.

Zane Tackett, Bitfinex's community and product development director, announced the hack on Reddit and put the loss at 119,756 bitcoins. Bitfinex halted all trading, digital token deposits and withdrawals. The exchange did not confirm if it had any plans to reimburse affected customers.

Bitfinex released a statement: “While we conduct this initial investigation and secure our environment, bitfinex.com will be taken down and the maintenance page will be left up. The theft is being reported to — and we are co-operating with — law enforcement.”

News of the hack saw the value of bitcoins drop 20% from $604 to $482. However, by the end of the day, the value had rebounded slightly to $544.71.

The heist is being called a 21st century bank robbery.
