Bitfinex Hacker to Give Away 1,000 Bitcoins

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 08/05/2016 01:25 PM [ comments Comments ]

We reported on the heist from Bitfinex that saw 119,756 bitcoins stolen.

Now, it seems the hacker, who posted on Reddit under the handle of rekcahxfb, is planning on giving away 1,000 bitcoins.

The hacker also posted on Bitcoin Talk where he asked potential donnees the chance to get the coins by submitting their bitcoin addresses.

The Bitcoin Talk thread had 156 pages of replies from people entering the draw as of Thursday.

One theory being proposed is that the hacker is trying to launder the ill got gain:

Here’s what I’m guessing is happening. The person who hacked Bitfinex is now trying to launder the money. Here’s how: Declare a ‘giveaway’ where you give 1,000 bitcoin to some ‘random’ person who posts their address on several different bitcoin forums.

“Then, post an address yourself to one of the forums. Wait a week, and give the money to the address you posted. Claim the money wasn’t illegally gotten, but from this giveaway."

Only time will tell as the give away is scheduled for this coming Wednesday.
