You may recall that we reported on a cybercriminal who was outed by Brian Krebs and the criminal tried to exact revenge by sending him a package of heroin.
Sergey Vovnenko, aged 31, was also known as “Sergey Vovnencko,” “Tomas Rimkis,” “Flycracker,” “Flyck,” “Fly,” “Centurion,” “MUXACC1,” “Stranier” and “Darklife", was arrested in Italy in June 2014. He spent the next 15 months trying to fight an order of extradition. He failed in the attempt.
Vovnenko admitted stealing login credentials and payment card data as part of an international hacking conspiracy, and pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced to 41 months in prison, 3 years of supervised probation and fined $83,000 in restitution.
Authorities reported that Vovnenko was an administrator of two cybercrime forums between September 2010 and August 2012. During that time, he and his cohorts infected 13,000 computers with the Zeus banking Trojan in order to steal valuable information.
Krebs was following Vovnenko in 2013 and managed to determine his true identity. In an act of revenge, Vovnenko requested the help of other fraudsters to help him acquire heroin from the Silk Road website and send it to Krebs. However, the journalist had infiltrated Vovnenko’s forum and alerted the police before the drugs arrived.
