The largest DDoS attack ever reported took aim on investigative journalist Brian Krebs.
His website, KrebsOnSecurity, was the victim of a attack that peaked at 665 Gbps and 143 Mpps (million packets per second). The attack was attempted using various types of DDoS attacks, including SYN and HTTP floods.
Krebs uses the services of Akamai, the company that provides DDoS protection services, which mitigated the attack.
It is still unknown, but Krebs feels the attack was carried out by a botnet that consisted of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as webcams and routers, that have default or weak credentials.
Previous DDoS attacks, as reported by Arbor Networks, sited some of its customers falling victim to attacks in the range of 500, 450 and 425 Gbps.
Although it has been questioned, the BBC was victim of an attack by an anti-ISIS group that flooded the site with a reported 600gbps.
Krebs' site has often been the target of criminals trying to take down his site because of his reporting on cybercriminals.
Just before the latest attack, Krebs did an article about the activities of a DDoS mitigation firm called BackConnect.
DDoS attacks are not the least of his worries. He has been the victim of swatting and even had criminals sending him drugs by the individuals that he was investigating. His website was not the only target. On Wednesday, his Skype account was attacked as well as his email inbox with a flood of subscriptions.
