BT Customers Offered Fake Rebate

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 10/10/2016 11:41 AM [ comments Comments ]

BT internet customers in the north of England have been getting email scam offers of a refund.

A fake email has been going out to BT customers saying they were entitled to a refund on their bills. All they had to do was log in to a fake website. Upping the chance that customers would fall for the scam, the email included a photo of 20 "employees."

Logging into the fake website would have given the hackers access to the victims bank account.

BT has alerted their customers: “This email is a scam. If anyone clicked on the (website) it would almost definitely be asked for bank details for the ‘refund’.

“We advise customers to forward any BT-branded phishing emails to phishing@bt.com. They will then be investigated by the BT security team.

“We have also set up a new phishing webpage for customers to use.

“If you are in any doubt of the authenticity of any contact from any company you should always ring the company direct and check. Never enter bank or personal details.”

BT experts have managed to shut down the scam.

It is unknown as to how many customers have fallen victim to the scam.
