A cell phone led to the capture of a burglar after it was left on a counter at the scene of the crime; the mother of the suspect called the phone and investigators were nice enough to answer.
The Sun-Sentinel reports, Derek Codd, 19, is facing multiple charges, including larceny and burglary. Deputies say they were able to track him down because he left his cellphone on the kitchen counter — and his mom called.
An investigator picked up the phone when it started ringing at the Lake Worth house and the word "Mom" appeared on the screen, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrest report. He asked the woman on the other end who the phone belonged to, and she said her son, Derek Codd.
Codd, 19, of Lake Worth, had the victim's cellphone at his house and had hidden the man's shotgun at an abandoned house, the report said. A woman who was with him, Kristen Rynearson, 19, of Lantana, had 49 pieces of jewelry belonging to the victim's wife in her purse.
Both were arrested. They're facing multiple charges, including burglary and larceny.
