Anyone who has met me will find out very quickly that I am a huge fan of horror movies and a massive fan of Penn Jillette. I've met both Penn and Teller. They are very gracious people and was I even asked to help with a magic trick in Vegas involving a bunny, a wood chipper and a Jack of Diamonds...I still have the Jack of Diamonds. Heck, I once flew 1500 miles to see Penn and Tellers 3D Haunted House... It was good. Yup, I'm one big, geeky Penn and Teller fan. So when I heard of Penn's new movie project 'Director's Cut' I was more than intrigued.
The details of the plot are not released as yet but you'll get the gist from the promo video below. (Warning it's not safe for work) To nutshell the project for you, Penn has written a horror movie and has teamed with director Adam Rifkin to handle that end. To get it made and he has turned to crowd funding via FundAnything.
"Director’s Cut” is a crazy idea for a movie. It’s different than anything you've seen before. It’s scary, funny, and very meta. I like movies that are scary, but I don’t want them to be dirt dumb. I want a movie that gets my blood racing, makes me laugh, but also gives me something to think about, with maybe a little sexy thrown in. Hollywood doesn't make movies like that. They make torture porn and comedies but they don’t put them together. They make smart movies but . . . oh wait, no they don’t make smart movies, never mind."
For those unfamiliar, crowd funding, it is a way that allow inventors / artists to reach directly out to the consumer. This lets early fans/investors to get a pretty big bang for their buck by contributing to a project as the inventor or in this case movie maker tries to make an enticing case for you to fork over your loot. Often you can get large discounts, special items, signed copies of things - you get the idea.
In this case, Penn is offering all that and then some. You want red carpet VIP treatment? You can get it. Movie making classes from Mr. Rifkin? Sure. On screen roll? Of course. Executive Producer credit on the movie? Not a problem, for a price. However, the Pièce de résistance in this case is Penn and Adams pony tails. Yes, you read that right.
"That's right, Adam and I are going to give one very lucky (and let’s say “eccentric”) contributor our actual ponytails. Chopped right off of our heads. You can brush them, braid them, sew them onto the backs of baseball hats, Hell, make voodoo dolls out of them for all we care. They'll make the perfect addition to anyone's creepy creepy collection of creepy creepy stuff. Now make no mistake, we love having our ponytails attached to our skulls, we've both worn them for years, but Adam and I are willing sever our Samson hair if it helps us get our movie funded."
The only catch is that they'll cost is $25,000. Now granted the dollar isn't worth what it used to be, but 25k is still 25k. It's not like I have that kind of cash just floating around. So I asked my local banker what he collateral value of human hair was these days and for some reason he looked at me really funny and started reaching for a red button. (Damn bankers). So it's up to you.. if you have a spare $25,000 laying around feel free to send it my way. otherwise I'll happily be content with the Blu-ray pack and helped spread the word.
