Edward Majerczyk, 29, a Chicago man who was involved in the posting of nude photo's of celebrities, such as Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton, is headed for jail.
The judge in the case said that his “conduct was abhorrent.” Although Majerczyk was not convicted of posting the photo's, he was found guilty of breach of privacy. His sentence was a light nine months.
Majerczyk did admit to hacking more than 300 Apple iCloud and Gmail accounts using a phishing scheme. He sent fake emails purportedly from the victims ISP stating that they needed the username and password to their accounts. Gaining entry to the accounts, he then siphoned off sensitive data and photo's. He targeted as many as 100 celebrities.
Majerczyk was also ordered to pay $5,700 as restitution for one of his victims who had to undergo counseling after personal data was published on the web.
A plea deal was worked out whereby Majerczyk only had to plead guilty to one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information. He could have been sentenced to five years on that charge.
Majerczyk apologized to the court for the "pain and grief" he caused.
