Cerber 3.o has emerged as a new variant that uses the Magnitude and RIG exploit kits (EKs) to deliver the payload.
A malicious ad will pop up after clicking to play a video will direct the victim to the EK landing page. Although Magnitude uses a simple script, Rig will open a background display of a US clothing store to try to assure te victim that it is a legit site.
If Magnitude and Rig are successful, it will then drop the Cerber 3 ransomware. Cerber announces itself with an audio message and offers a discount. The price of bitcoins has fluctuated and instead of the 1.4 bitcoin demand, it is not reduced to 1 bitcoin. However, if the ransom is not paid in five days, the ransom doubles.
The ransomware is making a name for itself as it accounted for a quarter of ransomware detections in early July. It is expected to garner the hackers $2.3 million in annual revenue.
