According to a Wall Street Journal report, China is now going to embed cybersecurity police units into major Chinese internet companies.
The Journal said that the move will allow the government to further control content as well as the country's online forums and websites. However, the governments’ news service bills the move as a way to help the companies prevent crimes, such as fraud, and also the “spreading of rumors.”
It is not known from their announcement if the government is planning on putting officers into the international tech companies operating in the Asian country. An internet law was introduced earlier this year that called for tighter controls over internet companies. The law further requires companies to store user data and share it with the government.
This move is thought to be an additional way to exert control after pushback over the proposed legislation.
