Although it is not being reported as ransomware, the City of Newark has been hit by a hacker who encrypted the system files of some city computers and rendered them useless.
The hackers are demanding a ransom of $30,000 bitcoin to restore the systems.
The malware has been active since Friday and encrypted nearly all files that operate on a desktop.
State and federal investigators are working to determine the culprit. Some city services have been affected but not the police department.
