Dutch police, with the help of Kaspersky Lab, arrested two men in connection with a ransomware scheme that locked up thousands of devices.
The two men, aged 18 and 22, were arrested in the scheme to propagate the ransomware that locked up 1,500 computers around the world. They ceated CoinVault in November 2014 and stopped in April 2015.
In April 2015, Dutch police teamed up with Kaspersky to create a website of decryption keys, thereby allowing victims to avoid paying the ransom.
The arrests were made possible by collaboration between Kaspersky and Panda Security. Jornt van der Wiel, security researcher at Kaspersky, noted that an April 2015 malware sample contained “flawless Dutch phrases.”
"Dutch is a relatively difficult language to write without any mistakes, so we suspected from the beginning of our research that there was a Dutch connection to the alleged malware authors. This later turned out to be the case,” van der Wiel said.
