'Cookie Monster' arrested for stealing from Girl Scouts (Video)

Posted by: Jon Ben-Mayor on 03/02/2014 08:23 AM [ comments Comments ]

A man in California was arrested after he ran off with a tip jar from some local Girl Scouts; the girls were set up in front of an Escondido supermarket when the theft occurred. The collected money inside the tip jar was gong to be used to buy cookies for soldiers serving overseas, commonly referred to as 'Operation Thin Mint'.

When asked about the incident, one of the Girl Scouts says that she heard the suspect, later identified as David Betancort, laughing as he ran away carrying the stolen cash jar. Another said “Don’t mess with Girl Scouts and don’t mess with soldiers.”

According to the report from the Orlando-Sentinel, a half-dozen Escondido police and U.S. marshals descended on David Betancort’s home as part of warrant sweep.

As shown on KFMB-CBS8, Betancort broke a window and tried to outrun the law enforcement contingent until he was tackled and subdued.

He was booked into county jail, where he remains on outstanding warrants related to battery and violation of a gang injunction, police said. A petty theft charge will probably be added, police said.
