The U.S. Department of Justice has announced that the fifth and final defendant in a gang of immigrants from Eastern Europe has pleaded guilty to credit and debit card fraud.
The gang made off with an estimated $5 million from five companies. The losses from one company resulted in the shutting down of the company.
Irina Fedoseeva, 33, a Russian national residing in Los Angeles, was the final defendant who pleaded guilty and admitted to the theft of more than $225,000 in losses.
The gang obtained the cards as a consequence of cyberattacks on two healthcare administrators to the tune of $550,000 and $3.5 million. They then used the cards to make purchases from retailers such as Apple, Best Buy, Home Depot and Target which they then resold on the internet.
They also obtained credit cards by hacking into an airline's computer system and funding the cards with $900,000.
Sentencing is scheduled for June and September. Patapau, Safin and Fedoseev each face a statutory maximum sentence of 12 years in federal prison. Gerasimova faces a statutory maximum sentence of seven years, and Fedoseeva faces a statutory maximum sentence of five years.
