A new policy at the Cumberland Elementary in Crossville, Tennessee, lead to the arrest of a parent after he arrived to pick up his kids (on time); the new rule states that only kids being picked up via car are allowed to leave at the 2:00 pm dismissal time, all others must wait until 2:35 pm.
The Daily Caller reports that Jim Howes, maintained that the policy was meant to apply to students walking home by themselves, not students walking home with their parents.
“You don’t need a reason as a parent to go get your children,” he told school officials.
When Howes suggested that state law was on his side–and that he school had to release kids to him on time – Aytes, the school resource officer, handcuffed him and put him in a police car.
Howes is now facing charges.
According to WATE 6, County Sheriff Butch Burgess said he agrees with Howe on principle. Both men say the new policy is creating safety concerns, mainly because there is line of cars that along the highway outside of the school. Burgess says parents should take any policy concerns to those in charge of the policy, not the school resource officer.
