The world’s biggest online drug site, AlphaBay, has closed after numerous international law enforcement operations and multiple raids.
It’s also been reported that one of the captured suspects died in jail.
The website went dark on July 5th and it is rumored that its administrators may have made off with a lot of digital currency, which is pretty normal for cybercriminals.
Alexandre Cazes, a 26-year-old, is suspected of running AlphaBay and was captured with the help of US, Canada as well as Thailand authorities. He was found dead in a Thai jail cell on Wednesday.
Cazes had been a resident in Thailand for about eight years and when authorities raided his residence, they found four Lamborghini cars and evidence of three upscale residences with a combined value of $11.7m.
When the dark web marketplace went offline, authorities estimate that the owners made off with up to $3.7m in digital currency.
Avi Kasztan, chief exec of Sixgill, believes that the second biggest marketplace, Dream Market, will fill the void. Dream Market also sells drugs, counterfeit items, stolen data, fraudulent products, and more.
GammaBay is a new site created by AlphaBay's loyal fans.
