Dutch internet provider Ziggo still considers four teenagers (aged 14 to 17) and one adult (aged 21) suspects in two major August DDoS attack that left the company's 1.8 million customers without internet access for several days.
A Ziggo spokesperson was quoted as saying, "it was a special situation. We were digitally attacked and received demands through videos. So there was talk of blackmail.”
According to the report by authorities in the Netherlands, the five suspects were posting YouTube videos of themselves making demands and threatening more attacks.
The public prosecution department, in a Wednesday statement, said it appeared that the young attackers "wanted to show they were capable of having a major effect such as taking down an internet provider."
An investigation is still under way. The suspects’ phones, computers, hard drives, and USB drives were confiscated.
