China is being accused of hacking into the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, which may have allowed attackers to gain access to sensitive national security data.
The weather agency hosts a computing center used by multiple government agencies and has network connections to Australia's Department of Defence. An unnamed source said the breach was massive. The official told ABC News that he was certain "it was China" that breached the systems.
The breach has uncovered numerous "holes" in the system that the official said would take millions to fix. However, the government has made it a policy not to speak about specific computer security events.
According to a Chinese spokesman: “As we have reiterated on many occasions, the Chinese government is opposed to all forms of cyber-attacks. We have stressed that cyber-security needs to be based on mutual respect.”
The Bureau of Meteorology operates "Solar," which is an Oracle based computing center based on a cluster of 576 dual-processor blade servers primarily used to run weather models. The data provides "environmental intelligence" which is shared by other government agencies as well as the military.
