An unmanned military defense blimp broke free from its tether in Aberdeen, MD. and caused the scrambling of f-16 fighters. According to officials the object was last seen floating northeast at about 30 miles per hour and was somewhere just across the Pennsylvania border north of Baltimore.
According to Aberdeen Proving Ground officials, the blimp-like object is an unmanned aerostat carrying the Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS) which broke loose from its tether at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. There is a fail safe that should cause the blimp, which is as long as a football field, to deflate but it failed (made by the same manufacturing contractor as the tethering system? - Lowest bidder).
Authorities are asking that anyone that spots the massive blimp to please call 9-1-1. The way the officials are talking it sounds as if they can't track this multi-million dollar blimp that contains sensitive missile defense equipment. Feel safe?
***UPDATE*** The blimp has been secured; it came down in the area of Muncy, near Williamsport according to a state police spokesman.
