Dogecoin? Nevermind, they were hacked

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 12/31/2013 11:37 AM [ comments Comments ]

Ever hear of a Dogecoin? It's a new cryptocurrency. The value of a dogecoin is set at $0.0006. Not very valuable, but valuable enough for hackers to steal what they could find from online wallets.

The online wallet service Dogewallet was hacked and the thieves reportedly reconfigured the server so that all accounts fed directly into their own address. The amount stolen is estimated to be 30 million, which at $0.0006, is worth about $18,000.

Dogewallet has posted the address it believes was the beneficiary of the purloined Dogecoins. It's still unclear if they will be able to retrieve the currency.

If you haven't before heard of Dogecoin, don't worry. It's doubtful if the service will continue. The operators wrote on Reddit: "We're going to compensate all invested users and as much non-invested user balances as possible and discontinue the website."
