Domain Notification Spam?

Posted by: Timothy Tibbetts on 12/16/2016 05:35 AM [ comments Comments ]

If you recently registered a domain name you might have started getting emails from these scumbags trying to get your credit card information. Here's the deal.

These emails might read something similar to "Domain Notification for yourdomainname.com : This is your Final Notice of Domain Listing."

The emails usually look a little like this:

They're plenty of red flags here in this email. Before we get to that, remember that we don't click links in emails. Ever. It's just not worth it. Always login to whoever you purchased your domain name from.

Anyway, here are some of the red flags:

1: You already bought your domain. These emails come in 24-72 hours after purchasing your domain name.
2: Email address is junk. As you can see, the email here is a joke. crankmails.com is pretty ironic, I'll give them that.
3: 1-2 day warning. Yeah, no legitimate domain provider gives you 24 hours or else. Often you get a reminder a month in advance.
4: The email link at the bottom goes to a website with a Brazilian domain name. Unless you're in Brazil and bought your domain at that website...

You should also expect to receive some phone calls. Parasites are everywhere, servicing their own niche. Domain name and credit card theft is just one of many.

You can also expect a ton of SEO, logo, and website design spam emails as well.

To avoid this happening, you need to make your information private. Often this is an additional cost ($7.95 at GoDaddy) but if you only have a couple of domain names then you might consider it just to avoid this. You might also see a few other scam attempts so keep in mind if these people have your information, so do others.

Oh, and expect to see these again months in advance of your domain name(s) expiring. Every single time.
