Download Round-Up for the week of September 12th

Contributed by: Email on 09/17/2011 07:13 AM [ comments Comments ]

Not a real exciting week but we added quite a few new downloads including a developer preview of a little program called Windows 8. I have been running it on my laptop all week and it works great and is very stable for an alpha release. If you want to run it please heed our warnings first below and on the download page itself. A new company emerged with a free desktop publishing program called SpringPublisher. It is free and allows you to create business cards, flyers, etc. An upgrade is available with more features and they are giving Majorgeeks 300 keys to share with our readers! Nice, eh? Be sure to hit up Facebook for more.

TuneupUtilities also sent some new keys to giveaway but if you didn’t win they are offering 20 bucks off until Monday! Check it out at http://tinyurl.com/63pqxdz

Don't forget to get involved with Majorgeeks for fun and great giveaways:

And now for all of downloads you might have missed:

New this week (oldest listed first):

Merge MP3 0.1k:
It is often necessary to merge multiple sound files into one recording. This need may arise for various reasons: merge ripped CD tracks into one, combine multiple chapters of an audiobook, etc.
Majorgeeks: Great tool to merge MP3's. As free goes, this is the best.
http://majorgeeks.com/Merge_MP3_d7165.html

TopWinPrio 1.0.0:
TopWinPrio checks every now and then to see what window is active at the moment. When it finds the one, it gives it higher priority than the usual normal priority.
Majorgeeks: Pretty slick idea. By giving high priority applications an above normal priority it can free up some resources. It is geared towards gaming but might help all around system performance.

Web Pinner:
Web Pinner is a freeware app that can add website links to your Windows 7 desktop’s right-click context menu, quickly and easily.
Majorgeeks: Sick of working your way through your entire bookmarks for your favorites? This is a neat idea to solve that. I use a custom homepage with my favorite links but this is a quick way to save your favorite sites.
http://majorgeeks.com/Web_Pinner_d7167.html

WinCrashReport 1.00:
WinCrashReport provides an alternative to the built-in crash reporting program of Windows operating system.
Majorgeeks: As always, NirSofts small utilities are great. In this case it provides more information about crashes than Windows does, which is almost useless in its current form.

RText 1.5.0:
The goal of RText is to create a complete, fully-featured text editor (designed primarily for programmers, but can be used by anyone) that can run on any platform.
Majorgeeks: What might be mistaken as another Notepad clone the author has continued to expand it. I am looking forward to trying it against the more expensive shareware competition like UltraEdit.

MyPC 2.7.0.0:
System information and control center.
Majorgeeks: Another system information tool to crowd this already busy area. This one works well and is laid out well and has a more advanced shareware version. My biggest issue is that it also adds file search, duplicate file cleaner and other utilities confusing us as to what it is supposed to really be. It goes beyond a simple system information tool and becomes a bit cluttered for its stated purpose.

ModernView 2.1:
With ModernView watching or presenting images looks professional and is fun too thanks to a modern graphics card and a simple, consistent and efficient user interface.
Majorgeeks: At only 420 KB this is a nice little program to present slide shows with.

Windows 8 Developer Preview Build 8102 M3:
This is a detailed preview of the next major release of Windows, code-named "Windows 8". From the chipset to the user experience, Windows 8 brings a new range of capabilities without compromise.
Majorgeeks: I have been running this on my laptop since released. It is considered a developer release so if you install it, you can’t upgrade and you can’t go back. In other words you can install it but need to format to go back. Not for the average user but the geek who wants to tinker and be in the loop. So far the code is stable for me but I don't care for the main interface which is designed for touchscreens. That said this IS pre beta (alpha) code so taking that into consideration, it's off to a great start.

Norton Anti-Theft 1.0.0.69 Beta:
Norton Anti-Theft is a product that helps you protect and recover your device if it’s lost or stolen. With Norton Anti-Theft you can track the location of your device, capture pictures and more.
Majorgeeks: Free during beta, this should track your lost devices including laptops and Android devices. Similar in functionality to Apples Mobile Me, maybe Apple should use this since they seem to "lose" a prototype once a year? :)
http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Anti-Theft_d7173.html

SpringPublisher 2.1:
SpringPublisher is a professional and easy to use desktop publishing software.
Majorgeeks: This free program lets you create business cards, flyers and more. It's pretty easy to use and we should be doing a 300 key giveaway soon!
http://majorgeeks.com/SpringPublisher_d7174.html

WinMend Folder Hidden 1.4.5.3:
WinMend Folder Hidden is a file / folder hiding tool. While ensuring the absolute system safety, this application can quickly hide files and folders on local partitions and/or on removable devices.
Majorgeeks: A free alternative to hiding your files and folders from prying eyes.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/WinMend_Folder_Hidden_d7175.html

Must have updated software this week (oldest listed first):

Patch My PC 2.0.1 Final:
Patch My PC is a portable and reliable utility designed to check your system against the current version of Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash, Mozilla Firefox, Oracle Java, Apple Quicktime, and more!
Majorgeeks: I like to keep my startup items lean and this allows me to check for new versions from Java, Adobe Apple and more.
http://majorgeeks.com/Patch_My_PC_d6943.html

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300:
Have you ever considered what makes an anti-malware application effective? We at Malwarebytes have created an easy-to-use, simple, and effective anti-malware application.
Majorgeeks: Easily considered one of the best anti-malware apps out there. Everyone should have a copy of this.
http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

XnViewMP 0.39 Beta:
XnView is a cross-platform image viewer used for viewing, converting, organising and editing graphical & video files.
Majorgeeks: A great graphics program from the author of XNView offering a lot of features that professional programs offer. Majorgeeks pick.
http://majorgeeks.com/XnViewMP_d6248.html

Defraggler 2.07.346:
Use Defraggler to defrag your entire hard drive, or individual files - unique in the industry. This compact and portable Windows application supports NTFS and FAT32 file systems.
Majorgeeks: Everyone hates the included Microsoft defrag but there are plenty of good alternatives. Here is one.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Defraggler_d5777.html

EULAlyzer 2.1:
EULAlyzer can analyze license agreements in seconds, and provide a detailed listing of potentially interesting words and phrases.
Majorgeeks: Sick of reading EULA's? Yeah, we don't really read them either. With this utility you can do a quick scan for any keywords mentioning toolbars, known adware and more before you install a program.
