In a bold move, hackers gained access to the lower house of the Dutch parliament, the Tweede Kamer, and infected their system with ransomware.
The attack was only partially effective before it was stopped.
Although the parliament would not comment upon the attack, parliamentarian Kees Verhoeven tweeted that ransomware had hit the government computer system.
Verhoeven tweeted, as translated, “ICT system Lower House hit by ransomware. Very annoying but hopefully there will finally awareness.”
A Dutch TV station, NOS, managed to obtain an internal Tweede Kamer email that confirmed that the ransomware was in their system and encrypting files. Fortunately, the system had been backed up and the lost files were restored.
