Retired Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., speaking at the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business, told the audience that Edward Snowden should be publicly executed when captured.
Chambliss' remarks came in response to a question about recent hacks of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
The former senator compared the ramifications of the OPM breach to those of Snowden leaking information on the U.S. government. His concern was that China now has information on American citizens and CIA personnel.
The former vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence said: "I hope none of you have sympathy for him because we need to hang him on the courthouse square as soon as we get our hands on him."
He conjectured that the OPM breach will likely result in the loss of American lives "just like with Snowden."
