Another game forum has been hacked, this time it is forum accounts associated with Unreal Engine and its maker, Epic Games.
Hundreds of thousands of accounts including usernames and passwords were stolen. Estimates put the total at more than 808,000. According to sources, the attack took place August 11th. Sources also report that the passwords were scrambled.
The breach is thought to be due to unpatched vBulletin. The hacker got away with usernames, scrambled passwords, email addresses, IP addresses, birthdates, join dates, their full history of posts and comments including private messages, and other user activity data from both sets of forums.
The passwords were scramble in a way that is not typical from other breaches. Epic Games says they are not readily or easily crackable.
Epic Games forum appears to be down due to the hack, but the Unreal Engine forum is still up.
