A Europol consortium of Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, Spanish Guardia Civil, the British West Midlands Regional Cyber Crime Unit, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, swooped down on credit card fraudsters and arrested 15 suspects in Canada, Finland, Spain and the UK.
One of those arrested was an 18 year old from Birmingham. Authorities also questioned two teenagers, aged 15 and 16.
While the raids were being carried out, West Midlands Police’s organized crime unit raided three homes in Great Barr, Birmingham and Coventry. Detective Inspector Rob Harris said: "We've played our part by executing warrants at addresses in the West Midlands suspected of being linked to the card scam investigation and cybercrime offences that's seen websites compromised and accounts taken over.”
The investigation centers on the use of 6,000 credit card details that were used on 170 online retailers to purchase goods which resulted in losses of more than €1 million.
The scheme consisted of the crooks using the cards to verify their effectiveness in purchasing goods and then selling the cards on the dark web.
