Adam Flanagan, 42, of Bala Cynwyd, Penn., has been sentenced to a year and a day for hacking his ex-employer.
In court, Flanagan admitted hacking his ex-employer in what he described as an “F-U” to his ex-boss. His tampering of the smart water meters control access disrupted water utilities in five cities across three states.
Being a jerk drew the attention of the Federal government which is a bit sensitive about cyberattacks against critical infrastructure.
Before losing his job, Flanagan was tasked with setting up Tower Gateway Basestations (TGBs) which collect data from smart meters in customers’ homes. With that knowledge, he disabled some, changed the passwords on some to offensive words and phrases like “fuckyou,” all for fun.
He was originally charged with twelve counts of damaging protected computers, but copped a plea and received a short prison term, three years probation and a fine of $40,000.
In an interview with the FBI, Flanagan admitted that his intentions were not malicious, but only to be a "dickhead.”
