Facebook is trying to keep its users safe by buying passwords off the dark web.
Facebook CSO Alex Stamos said that with 1.3 billion users, the company strives to keep its users safe. In the vein, Facebook acquires password lists and cross references them with its users passwords.
Stamos joined Facebook as chief security advisor in 2015 and said that it is a tough job keeping its users safe.
"The reuse of passwords is the No. 1 cause of harm on the internet," said the security chief.
Everytime a breach occurs and passwords are stolen, it becomes obvious how weak peoples passwords are. 12345 and password are still at the top of the list for many users.
After cross checking passwords, the company alerts thousands of users that their passwords are weak and vulnerable.
Facebook takes security seriously and provides many ways to keep accounts secure. Users can use traditional two-factor authentication, identifying faces of friends, as well as machine learning algorithms to determine and inform whether activity on your account is fraudulent.
If an account is compromised, Facebook has another measure to recover the account. The social network allows you to let your close friends verify account recovery request on your behalf.
