With nearly 1 billion users, Facebook has partnered with five security software companies to crack down on phishing schemes. Microsoft Corp., McAfee Inc., Trend Micro Inc., Sophos Ltd., and Symantec Corp. are joining Facebook to fight to keep users from sharing links to websites that install malware that can interfere with a computers operation. Facebook has its own tools in its arsenal and a vast database of malicious Web addresses.
Facebook members (numbering more than 900 million) post an enormous amount of links, some from blacklisted sites. Now Facebook will warn users when they click on a site it suspects could pose a threat to a computer.
As part of the new partnership, Facebook users can sign up for free six-month subscriptions to anti-virus software to install on their computers. Facebook is attempting to shore up security issues that have plagued the websites operations while security vendors are hoping to hook some paying customers.
