Facebook is about to start warning users that state-sponsored attacks are targeting users accounts.
CSO Alex Stamos wrote this week that users will be prompted to enable “login approvals,” which function similarly to two-factor authentication.
Stamos wrote: “Whenever your account is accessed from a new device or browser, we'll send a security code to your phone so that only you can log in. We recommend you also take steps to secure the accounts you use on other services.”
Stamos goes on to say that when an account is compromised, Facebook will secure it. He believes that state sponsored attacks are more “advanced and dangerous” and thus warrant additional protection.
If a user sees a pop up, it is a good indication that your system may have become compromised and further investigation is needed in case of malware.
