Fake AdBlock app pulled from Google Play store

Posted by: Timothy Weaver on 11/03/2014 02:43 PM [ comments Comments ]

Google blocked the popular app AdBlock from the Google play store. Users cried foul which resulted in unscrupulous app creators.

The nasty programmers repackaged the real AdBlock for Android and, along with some ads, snuck it onto the Google Play store.

The app, when it first appeared on the Google Play store, was called "AdBlock Free Kaspersky Edition". It was quickly changed to "AdBlock Fee Plus Edition". Some of the analysts at Malwarebytes suspected the app since Google had banned it for so long.

The fake AdBlock app was a typical Android Trojan. Google removed the app. The fake app had the ability to redirect Web traffic. Unfortunately, the fake app was installed in as many as 50,000 to 100,000 downloads.
